Why You Can’t "Think" Your Way Out of Anxiety

Understanding Anxiety

We’ve all been there: stuck in a loop of overthinking, trying to solve our emotional problems like a math equation. We analyze why we feel stressed, we break down our past, and we make lists of things to change. Yet, despite all that mental effort, we often feel just as stuck as before.

As a hypnotherapist, I see this every day. Clients come to me having tried every "mindset hack" in the book. The reason these hacks often fail is simple: You cannot think your way around a feeling.

The Body Keeps the Score Neuroscience tells us that an emotion—even a difficult one—only takes about 90 seconds to move through the body. The reason it lasts for hours, days, or even years is not because of the emotion itself, but because of our resistance to it. When we suppress, judge, or analyze our feelings, we create a dam of emotional baggage.

True healing happens when we stop trying to "fix" ourselves from the neck up and start integrating our experiences through the body.

From "Earning" to "Being" Many of us spend our lives operating from an unconscious "I’m not good enough" operating system. We try to earn our worth through our careers, our relationships, or our bank accounts. We are constantly "becoming" something better, thinking that once we reach a certain goal, we will finally feel whole.

But here is the secret: You are already whole. The part of you that feels inadequate is just a coping mechanism you developed a long time ago. It isn’t who you are; it’s just a set of "glasses" you’ve been wearing.

Practical Steps to Reclaim Your Potential:

  1. Feel, Don’t Analyze: Next time you feel a surge of anxiety or frustration, pause. Stop the story in your head. Ask yourself, "What does this feel like in my body?" and simply let it move through you without judgment.

  2. Embrace Your "Inner Critic": Instead of fighting your inner critic, acknowledge it. It’s a part of you trying to keep you safe. By accepting it rather than judging it, you take away its power.

  3. Practice Conscious Expression: Don't let frustrations build up. Find a safe space (or a trusted partner) and give yourself permission to fully vent. Getting the energy out is essential for moving forward.

The Bottom Line Healing isn't about scrubbing away your past or becoming a "perfect" version of yourself. It is about removing the blocks that prevent you from living fully right now.

Are you ready to stop managing your stress and start clearing it at the root? Let’s work together to move past the stories and help you tap into the potential that has been there all along.
